What is a SIP channel, and how does it work? 

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. Simply put, a SIP trunk directly connects your Internet telephony service provider (ITSP) and your office or organization. This makes it easy to expand Voice over IP (VoIP) without installing an IP PTSN gateway. 

Without a gateway, VoIP extension is more natural and cheaper and offers a potential return on investment. So how do SIP trunks work? Let’s dive in.  

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a communication tool used to establish and manage VoIP call communication. It can also be used for: 

 – Negotiation 

 – Instant Messaging 

 – Multimedia 

 – Presence Updates 

 – Other Real Time Services 

 SIP is supported by the Real Time Protocol (RTP). RTP handles all the audio of a VoIP call. 

 By wire, we mean “circuit-switched data communication”.

 A circuit-switched network is a form of communication where a dedicated channel is used for transmission; it may sound new, but these networks have been around since 1878. It’s a complicated way of talking about systems like the telephone system. 

Telephone systems connect segments of wire into a single, uninterrupted line that allows calls to be made.

A SIP trunk is similar to a telephone system in that it links two telecommunications systems. There is one big difference here: 

A trunk refers to the physical lines. A SIP trunk is a virtual connection – there are no physical wires to connect or cross.

A SIP trunk allows you to disconnect your line from your telephone service provider. No wires or devices are needed to use the phone. Instead, it is built into your network. A SIP trunk is connected to an organization’s pre-existing Internet connection through a service provider

 SIP vs VoIP

They are related but have some fundamental differences. VoIP technology is an essential technology that allows you to make voice calls over the Internet instead of using a wired phone line. It breaks the sound into small pieces, converts them into a code, and sends them to the receiver via a wireless connection.

VoIP requires a broadband connection, a telephone (VoIP or traditional with an adapter), and the appropriate software.

SIP is suitable for VoIP because it is a “signalling” protocol for communication; it is a type of VoIP protocol. While VoIP carries voice, SIP goes further by adding video and messaging. 

 It is possible to create hybrid trunk systems with SIP for long-distance and video calls and PRI for local calls. Some see this as a cost-cutting measure but still benefit from PRI’s added security. If you make many international calls, you can save money, but you still have to spend money to invest in the hardware required by PRI and consider the costs associated with scaling difficulties.
