Don’t be vague. A false claim is easily disproven. To rebut “what if?” arguments, ask if the hypothetical event will ever materialise. Instead, provide examples like these: You may utilise stories like your uncle Ralph, the compulsive gambler, the War of 1812, Keynesian economics, etc. to make a point.
Make sure your examples are on subject, but not off.
Examples include personal experience, pop culture, history, sports, literature, and current events. Allowing too many instances might overwhelm the writing. Using a historical example, avoid turning your essay into a history paper or event narrative. In an issue essay, only use examples that support your argument.
Avoid first-person pronouns and self-references.
Avoid writing in the first person while writing an essay. Since the reader already knows that the essay is written from your viewpoint, it is unnecessary to include statements like “I believe.” In a body paragraph, only use first-person pronouns if providing a personal example. Never mention “I” in your introduction or conclusion.
SPEAK UP.
Directness reduces misunderstandings and miscommunications. This is essential since one of your graders is human and the other is machine. There’s a decent chance you’ve had a run-in with your GPS or Siri. To prevent this on the GRE, establish strong, declarative claims in your issue essay.
Finally, rebut the opposite position.
Many GRE applicants struggle with their essay conclusion. Consider offering the opposing viewpoint to show that you are aware that not everyone shares your viewpoint. Then debunk their claim and confirm your own.
